StEps to making a storysprings Story

From start to finish, it’ll take about eight weeks to complete our process and hand over your StorySprings story (or stories). Our total process can be accelerated with your help, but we value taking time and great care in crafting each work of art.

Step 1: PRELIMINARY EXCHANGE

Before we schedule the in-person interview, we will gather some preliminary information about the storyteller. Knowing a storyteller’s background – where you grew up, what you do for a living, if you’re a cat person or a dog person – will help StorySprings get to know you a little bit, leading to a warmer, more comfortable conversation.

During this preliminary exchange, which happens either through email or over the phone, we ask storytellers to choose one or a small handful of their absolute best stories to tell.

Step 2: INTERVIEW

StorySprings will work with you to schedule one or multiple interviews to hear your stories firsthand. We are flexible as far as finding a time and location that works for both parties. While we have done group interviews, we find that one-on-one interviews work best for narrowing the scope and focus of any one story. All interview audio is recorded for transcription and writing purposes. Interviews last anywhere from one to three hours, typically.

Step 3. TRANSCRIBING & RESEARCHING

After the interview(s), StorySprings begins the work of transcribing the entirety of the interview and researching historical context that could lend itself to a better telling of the story. On average, this process takes one or two weeks.

Step 4: FOLLOW UP & FACT CHECKING

StorySprings cares about telling stories that are not only vivid, but that are also accurate. We reserve a period of about one week for compiling a list of facts to confirm with the storyteller as well as historical contextual nuggets that we recommend including. All information will be submitted to the storyteller for approval. This is a chance for StorySprings to spout back to you what we heard and what we dug up to supplement what we heard.

Step 5: WRITING

Next comes the part where we close our office door, get cozy and quiet with the material we’ve been given, and start stringing words together. By the end of this incubation period, we will have a gem of a story – or  an entire chest of story gems – to share with you.

Step 6: REVIEW

StorySprings sends stories via snail mail or email to storytellers for review. This is a chance for storytellers to read and react to their stories. StorySprings allots one round of review followed by revisions, with an option to expand to up to two rounds of reviews and revisions (subject to an added fee).

Step 7: DELIVERABLES & FINAL HANDOFF

Once the story (or stories) are finished, we package them for delivery. Storytellers may request multiple copies of a finished story; any amount over two comes at an added cost. Total timeline from beginning to end, on average: eight weeks. Total process can be accelerated with the cooperation of the storyteller.
